We spent the first week (May 14 - 19) on our own road-tripping it from Dresden, German to Split, Croatia. The itinerary was flexible. Each stopover has a separate post, but here's a quick rundown of our route. We picked up our rental car at the airport and then spent the afternoon checking out Dresden. From there, we drove to Prague. Both of us have wanted to visit Prague for several years. It did not disappoint. We spent two days in Prague. We did a quick drive to Poland to visit Auschwitz. We spent the night and the next morning in Bratislava. Then on to Budapest for two days. Except for a short stop for lunch in the Croatian capital of Zagreb, the next day was nearly all driving from Budapest to the marina in Split.
We met up with our sailing family in Split. Ian & Laurel, of course, were the leaders who brought us all together and made the whole sailing week possible. Oh how we loved being out on the catamaran with so little to do and zero distractions. The week was spent talking with friends, reading books for fun, checking out Croatian islands and port cities, and catching up on sleep and the art of doing nothing. It was wonderful! (May 19 - 26)
We finished off the trip by driving from Split to Vienna, where we spent an evening and a day (May 26 - 27). I'll get to it in the Vienna post, but it was very nice to spend several hours back in the first city of my mission. I was able to spend time with a few special people from that time in my life and feel so fortunate that the frequent-flyer ticket availability worked out the way it did.

| I, in particular, loved to be back eating German cuisine. Ben, on the other hand, tried to find menu items he could tolerate. I guess it's something one needs to learn to love. |
