Helping himself

Robert has entered the phase of independence. He helps himself to whatever suits his interests, such as to the brownies pictured above.

He opens the fridge for an apple (of course only 3-4 bites and then puts it back for me to find it later), milk (from the carton, which is actually preferable than if he tries pouring it in a cup - less spillage! Although you won't drink milk at our house anymore), grapes, etc. He also reaches for anything on the counter. If he can't reach, he brings a chair or the stool from in front of the bathroom sink to help out.

James and Kate never got things out of the fridge at his age and they rarely do it now either.

Robert doesn't want help with anything. If we try to assist, he says emphatically, "I doot!" (I do it.) And then, given enough patience on my part, he usually manages do just that. Then, after completing the task, he flashes the largest, proudest smile on the planet. He's working on getting dressed these days. It can be pretty tough to find that hole in the sleeve, you know.
