Ages ranged from 3 to 7. Weight from 30 to 50 pounds. Kate and James are almost 4. Kate weighs 30 pounds, James 32. Clearly, they were two of the youngest, lightest, and bravest of the bunch.
James was second out of the shoot. James gave it a triumphal effort, but only managed to stay on a few strides out of the gate. Kate was the third participant. Her sheep ran out the the shoot and headed straight for the exit gate. Legs tight. Hands tightly gripped around the neck. And, a mouth full of wool. She was one with the mutton. They gave her a score of 89. (Whatever that means.) Bottom line, 11 more participants failed to stay on their sheep as long as Kate stayed on hers. She won!
Most kids, including James and Kate, were crying at the end of their mutton bustin' stint (which makes you wonder whose parents are crazy enough to let their kids participate). James and Kate landed hard and rolled on the ground. They both have smears of road rash across their backs. James pulled a muscle in his right arm enough that we wondered for an hour or so if it might be broken. It was quite an experience for all of us. Frankly, probably not one we'll repeat next year. But, fun to have done it once.

Mom told me about it last night. I am glad James is alright, it sounds a bit crazy. Way to go Kate though, that is awesome she won! Her tiny little body must be all muscle including the jaw strength.

Holy Moses! Way to go Kate! That was one ride... Looks like there's a future jockey in the family, or at least a good jockey story to share well into the future ;) Glad to see you documented the experience.
(BTW Julie, the comment you left about the Wilton tips and Ben's zero sympathy made me laugh for a long time... nice to know there's someone else out there who feels my pain)
Oh! I just read this today, several days after the fact. Congratulations Kate for winning, and James, I'm so sorry that you broke your arm! Get better quick!
