Big Trouble

Ben put Kate and James down for their nap this afternoon. We decided to take a nap too. We fell asleep. James and Kate did not. We woke up and wondered why we heard water running upstairs. Ben got up to investigate. He found Kate "washing" her Care Bear, James supervising. What is all over that bear? Kate proudly says, "soap." It's definitely not soap. Too greasy; too thick. Ben started to search the house to figure out what "soap" they had found. In the closet that adjoins our bedroom with Kate and James' bedroom, Ben discovered an empty jar of Leather Lube. Ben bought the jar of lube about a week ago along with a pair of new shoes. Until today, the jar was basically full. Now, all but empty. Two suit coats, dozens of silk ties, and all of our shoes (fine for the shoes, I guess) had been through the "wash" to one degree or another. Who knows IF the suit coats or ties will come clean and HOW MUCH it's going to cost to find out. Final question: How do we discipline two-year-olds?

I have no idea how you discipline a two year old (especially when they are think they are helping!). When you figure it out let me know though.

Don't know anything about discipline, but the photo of Kate bathing her doll in this entry looks a lot like the one from your special day out... where they pretended to bathe their dolls/bear at the Build A Bear.. was it? Hmm.

Oh noooo! Leather lube?! That does not sound so washable. Especially on silk. Ship them off to their quasi-relatives in CA (us.)

So what did you end up doing? Never having had little kids, I have no idea what is effective. I guess my approach would be to tell them that it wasn't soap, that it actually made a mess, you're really upset and they need to ask first before they do anything like that. But, gee, they're two. How much of that actually sinks in?

oh gosh that is classic. i especially love that first picture, with james looking on. if there's one thing that kids will teach you it is that stuff is just stuff. sure it could be expensive stuff here and there, but it helps keep things in perspective. (milla ruined a pair of pants today). glad you got it recovered. and when you find out the answer to your last question, let me know. . .

Oh my goodness. What a nightmare! Good luck disciplining kids who had no idea that they were doing anything wrong. It's such a tough stage!

This made me smile (maybe a few years down the road it will bring you a little smile too). At least it makes a great story. We had a similar incident at our house, thanks to our twins. The weapon of choice was a permanent marker rather than leather lube and it never did come out of some of our shoes and clothes. I admit, I'm still not smiling about that incident....need more road between me and that closet massacre.
